Saturday evening, 6 p.m. A man walked up to the Secret Service checkpoint at 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, pulled a revolver from his bag, and opened fire on officers.
Secret Service agents returned fire. The suspect — identified as Nasire Best, 21, of Maryland — was taken to George Washington University Hospital where he died. A civilian bystander was also struck and is in critical condition. One Secret Service agent was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Best had prior encounters with the Secret Service in 2025 and a documented history of mental health issues. President Trump was inside the White House and was not in danger.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is the third security incident near the White House in under two months — following the Correspondents’ Dinner shooting in April and a separate incident on May 4. The pattern has prompted renewed debate about security around the White House complex.
The FBI, ATF, and Metropolitan Police are assisting with the investigation. The bystander’s condition remains critical.
