This is still actively developing.
A 34,000-gallon tank of methyl methacrylate — a toxic, highly flammable chemical — at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove has been in crisis since Thursday. Friday, a valve failed and officials lost control of the tank entirely.
Fire officials said bluntly: “There are two options left. It fails or it blows up.”
The evacuation zone covers parts of Garden Grove, Cypress, Stanton, Anaheim, Buena Park, and Westminster. The tank temperature stabilized Friday evening, buying crews time overnight.
WHY IT MATTERS
If you are in the evacuation zone — between Trask Avenue, Ball Road, Valley View Street, and Dale Street — leave now. Do not wait.
If you smell something fruity and heavy, move away from the area immediately and call 911. Follow updates from the Orange County Fire Authority at ocfa.org.
