New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani lifted the citywide travel ban on nonessential travel at noon ET on Monday, following the blizzard that battered the city overnight. While the ban has been lifted, Mamdani urged drivers to exercise caution as road conditions remain icy, and advised New Yorkers to stay indoors as much as possible.
The storm caused significant disruption beyond the city itself. All flights to Boston and New York from London Heathrow were cancelled Monday, with some Tuesday morning departures also grounded. Flights arriving at Heathrow from both cities remain cancelled on Tuesday. Flights to New York from Dublin, Manchester and Edinburgh were also cancelled Monday morning but are expected to resume Tuesday. More than 5,000 flights across the US were cancelled to and from American airports on Monday.
On the ground in New York, the National Weather Service reported 20 incidents of trees falling due to blizzard conditions, leading to multiple road closures, utility disruptions and at least five reports of trees landing on buildings or vehicles.
