NYC Travel Ban Begins 9PM as Nor’easter Brings Blizzard Conditions to Tri-State

A major nor’easter is hitting New York City and the Tri-State Area on Sunday, bringing blizzard conditions, tropical storm-force wind gusts and potentially two feet of snow or more in some areas. Blizzard warnings are in effect across all of New York City, Long Island, the Lower Hudson Valley, most of New Jersey and southern Connecticut, with coastal flood warnings also active across all three states.

Snow totals are expected to reach 18 to 24 inches on parts of Long Island and the Jersey Shore, with at least 12 to 18 inches forecast for NYC and the broader Tri-State region.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a ban on all nonessential travel taking effect at 9 p.m. Sunday. Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed travel bans across New York City, Long Island and Westchester County all starting at the same time. New York City’s ban runs until noon Monday, Long Island’s until 9 a.m. Monday and Westchester’s until 10 a.m. Monday. Hochul made clear the bans will be enforced by state police, saying residents should stay wherever they are once 9 p.m. hits.
