Kuwait mistakenly shot down three American F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jets on Sunday night, US Central Command confirmed Monday. The incident occurred at 11:03 p.m. ET during active combat operations as part of Operation Epic Fury, the ongoing US and Israeli military campaign against Iran.

Central Command said Kuwaiti air defenses fired on the jets during a chaotic combat environment. That environment included simultaneous attacks from Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and drones. All six aircrew members ejected safely and have been recovered. They are in stable condition. Kuwait has acknowledged the incident.

In a separate statement Monday morning, Central Command confirmed that four US service members have been killed in action since the strikes began on Saturday. The fourth service member had been seriously wounded during Iran’s initial attacks and later died from their injuries. The identities of the fallen are being withheld until next of kin have been notified.

Iran has continued retaliating against the US and Israeli campaign with missile and drone strikes targeting Gulf countries and American bases across the Middle East. Major combat operations are ongoing.

Why This Matters to You:

This conflict is now claiming American lives and drawing in allied nations in ways that were not anticipated just days ago. The friendly fire incident involving Kuwait raises serious questions about coordination and communication among coalition forces during high-intensity combat. For families of US service members stationed in the Middle East, this is an immediate and deeply personal concern.

More broadly, with four Americans already killed and operations still escalating, this is no longer a limited strike campaign. It is worth thinking about: At what point does Congress step in to debate authorisation for what is clearly becoming a full-scale war? How does the friendly fire incident affect the US relationship with Kuwait, a key Gulf ally? And with Iran continuing to fire back across multiple fronts, how many more nations could be drawn into this conflict before it is over?
